Mexico is set to enter the electric vehicle arena with its first domestically designed and manufactured EV, named Olinia. Unveiled by President Claudia Sheinbaum, this compact city car is scheduled for release in June 2027, with an anticipated starting price of just 150,000 pesos (under $9,000 USD). The Olinia is the result of a collaborative effort involving Mexico's National Technological Institute (TecNM), the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), and government research centers, marking a significant step in the nation's technological development.
Designed with affordability and urban practicality in mind, the Olinia boasts a 14.7 kWh LFP battery offering a range of up to 100 km (62 miles). It features a simple yet functional interior, a 7-inch infotainment screen, and charging capabilities via standard household outlets, taking approximately 4-8 hours for a full charge. With an emphasis on low running costs, estimated at 49 centavos per kilometer, Olinia aims to provide substantial savings compared to traditional gasoline vehicles, directly competing with budget-friendly Chinese EVs and potentially transforming accessible electric mobility in Mexico.
