The U.S. Department of State has launched an online system for passport renewals, significantly simplifying a process that was historically known for its complexity. This new digital pathway allows eligible U.S. citizens to renew their passports without needing to mail physical documents, mirroring the ease of online shopping.
Eligibility for online renewal generally applies to passports issued within the last 15 years. Applicants must create a MyTravelGov account, upload a compliant digital photo, and complete the application, which the State Department estimates takes about 40 minutes. The system accepts credit cards, debit cards, and ACH transfers for payment. While the online method streamlines the application, standard processing times of four to six weeks for routine renewals remain in effect. Both passport books and cards can be renewed online, provided the applicant meets the specific criteria, which include age, residency, and the condition of the existing passport.
