These radicals interact with and break down the conjugated double bonds of complex organic chromogens, which are responsible for tooth discoloration, into simpler, colorless molecules. Whitening products utilize diverse delivery systems. Powders are often anhydrous formulations that require mixing with an aqueous gel or liquid at the point of use, activating the peroxide. Gels, conversely, are typically pre-mixed hydrogels designed for application via custom trays, strips, or direct application in-office. Beyond the primary active ingredients, advanced formulations often include a suite of adjunctive components. Desensitizing agents like potassium nitrate work by hyperpolarizing nerve endings within the dental pulp, reducing pain signal transmission. Fluoride, often in the form of sodium fluoride, aids in remineralization and strengthens enamel post-treatment. Glycerin and propylene glycol serve as humectants and carriers, maintaining moisture and preventing the gel from drying out, while also enhancing penetration of the active ingredient.
