A truly unique vehicle, the "Airnado" is a custom-built motorhome from the early 1980s, born from the ambitious fusion of a 1969 Oldsmobile Toronado's front end and a 1967 Airstream Land Yacht's body. This distinctive creation leverages the Toronado's front-wheel-drive platform, housing its powerful 455 cubic inch V8 engine and transaxle up front.
Wendell Atkins, the builder, integrated the Toronado's front clip onto a custom frame and attached the iconic aluminum Airstream shell. The living quarters inside have been recently renovated, featuring a kitchenette, dinette, bathroom, and sleeping berth. Modern amenities include solar panels, a 2kW inverter, and new batteries, enhancing its self-sufficiency. Despite a few minor quirks, the Airnado stands as a remarkable example of automotive customization and functional design.
