An unprecedentedly powerful cosmic microwave laser, dubbed a 'gigamaser,' has been discovered by astronomers using the MeerKAT telescope in South Africa. Located nearly 8 billion light-years away in the galaxy H1429-0028, this high-energy emission is the result of a massive galactic collision.
The signal's detection was significantly enhanced by gravitational lensing, a phenomenon where a foreground galaxy's gravity magnifies light from background objects. Researchers describe the maser as the most powerful of its kind ever found, providing a unique window into the extreme conditions of the early universe and energetic galactic events.
