Light pollution in the United Arab Emirates has significantly diminished the visibility of the night sky, obscuring celestial wonders like the Milky Way for most of the population. Recognizing this growing disconnect, the Dubai Astronomy Group is actively working to reintroduce the public to the cosmos through guided nighttime excursions. These events take place in designated dark sky areas, offering a stark contrast to the urban glow that dominates the region.
One such initiative involves trips to the Al Quaa Desert, identified as one of the darkest accessible spots within the Emirates. Here, away from city lights, participants can witness the Milky Way with the naked eye, observe meteor showers, and learn about constellations. These excursions aim not only to provide a recreational experience but also to foster a deeper appreciation for astronomy and our place in the universe, reviving an ancient connection to the stars that once guided Bedouin travelers across the desert.
