The City of Ekurhuleni has announced an ambitious R71 billion budget for the 2026/27 financial year, prioritizing the restoration of service delivery, infrastructure rebuilding, and economic stimulation. A key focus is recovering from significant electricity revenue losses, estimated at over R2.5 billion, through enhanced billing and investigations into potential fraud. The budget includes moderate tariff increases for residents, such as 2% on property rates and 11% on water, balanced against service sustainability needs.
Significant investments are planned for infrastructure maintenance and development, with R4.6 billion allocated to repairs and R3.3 billion for capital projects in energy, water, sanitation, and roads. The plan also emphasizes housing delivery, aiming for 70,000 units, and informal settlement upgrades. To spur economic activity, R7.5 million will establish the Ekurhuleni Development Agency to support businesses and job creation. Expanded debt relief measures and a strong anti-corruption stance are also central to the city's strategy to rebuild public trust and ensure efficient service provision.
