Authorities in Udupi district, Karnataka, have apprehended a 48-year-old individual from Karkala following accusations of posting derogatory remarks against Home Minister Priyank Kharge on a social media platform. The arrest, made by Karkala Town Police on Sunday, stems from a complaint lodged by a local resident, Suresh Chetanahalli.
According to the complaint, Chetanahalli observed a post on the 'Namma Karla' Facebook account. This post featured an image of Home Minister Kharge alongside a statement attributed to him, asserting that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) would not be permitted to propagate communalism during his tenure. Subsequently, a user identified as Sudhir Bangera reportedly posted a comment on this material that was deemed offensive and insulting towards the Home Minister.

Allegations of Inciting Communal Disharmony
The complainant, Suresh Chetanahalli, asserted that Bangera's comment possessed the potential to incite communal hatred and disrespect. Furthermore, the complaint alleged that the remarks were insulting to the Dalit community, to which Home Minister Priyank Kharge belongs. This alleged insult to a Scheduled Caste member forms a significant part of the legal case.
In response to the complaint, the Karkala Town police initiated legal action. They registered charges against the accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 351(3) concerning criminal intimidation, Section 353(2) for statements conducing to public mischief, and Section 196, which addresses promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion. Additionally, charges were filed under Section 33(1)(R)(U) of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, highlighting the seriousness of the alleged offense against a member of a marginalized community.
Arrest and Judicial Process
Following the registration of the complaint and the associated charges, the accused, Sudhir Bangera, was taken into custody. The Karkala Town Police confirmed the arrest in a press release issued on Sunday. Subsequently, the arrested individual was produced before the jurisdictional magistrate for further legal proceedings.
