Apple has launched the MacBook Neo, its most affordable Mac laptop to date at $599. This new model is designed to attract students and first-time Mac users by significantly reducing the entry price into Apple's ecosystem. However, this aggressive pricing comes at the cost of several premium features commonly found in higher-end MacBooks.
Key omissions include a backlit keyboard, Touch ID on the base model (requiring password entry or iPhone authentication), a Force Touch trackpad, and P3 wide color gamut display with True Tone technology. The Neo also features a less robust port selection, with only one high-speed USB-C port, and is limited to 8GB of non-upgradeable RAM. Furthermore, it lacks dedicated Neural Accelerators, which could impact performance on future AI-intensive tasks. While these compromises may be acceptable for basic computing needs, they position the MacBook Neo for casual use rather than demanding professional or creative workloads.
