Billie Little, a long-term Thomson Reuters employee, has filed a lawsuit claiming wrongful termination after she voiced concerns about the company's data contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Little and a group of colleagues felt that powerful data aggregation tools sold to ICE, such as the CLEAR platform which includes license plate data, could be misused for surveillance and potentially violate constitutional rights.
Following media reports of their concerns, Little alleges she was investigated for policy violations and subsequently fired, which she argues is illegal retaliation under Oregon law. The situation has also drawn attention from shareholders, who are pushing for independent human rights assessments of the company's data sales to agencies like ICE. This case underscores broader debates on corporate accountability, data privacy, and the ethical use of technology in government surveillance.
