Durban is embarking on an ambitious plan to revitalize its tourism sector, spearheaded by Mayor Cyril Xaba's focus on unlocking the potential of historical heritage assets. A key site in this strategy is Stainbank Castle, an architecturally significant property dating back to 1885, which Mayor Xaba has identified as a "hidden gem" with considerable tourism potential.
The initiative involves not only preserving and promoting sites like Stainbank Castle, which currently houses an art gallery and the Wilderness Leadership School, but also investing in new tourism infrastructure. This includes the planned unveiling of statues honoring struggle icons, further enriching Durban's cultural tourism offering. The city is actively seeking collaboration with the business sector and provincial government to develop new tourism products and enhance visitor experiences, aiming for sustainable economic growth and increased visitor numbers.
