The United Arab Emirates has issued a new policy restricting the use of the Emirati national dress in social media content and advertisements exclusively to UAE citizens. This measure aims to address growing public dissatisfaction over the appropriation and misrepresentation of traditional attire by non-Emiratis in commercial promotions, particularly in sectors like real estate.
Dr. Jamal Mohammed Al Kaabi, Secretary-General of the National Media Authority, confirmed the ban, emphasizing the need to respect local identity and prevent offensive portrayals. The policy stems from concerns raised within the Federal National Council about cultural distortion in media. It ensures that the national dress, a symbol of pride and heritage, is worn authentically by Emirati citizens in public-facing media, thereby preserving its cultural integrity.
