Machu Picchu, a global icon and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is currently facing a significant crisis due to severe overtourism. Visitors are encountering overwhelming crowds, lengthy queues, and inefficient transport systems, tarnishing the expected dream experience. The New7Wonders foundation, instrumental in the site's 2007 'Wonder of the World' designation, has stepped in, offering to partner with Peruvian authorities to implement improvements.
Jean Paul De la Fuente, director of the foundation, expressed concern over the lack of progress, attributing it partly to Peru's political volatility. He stated a willingness to work with the next administration to find solutions, emphasizing that the current situation is turning the dream of visiting Machu Picchu into a 'nightmare' for many. The foundation's aim is to prevent any potential risk to the site's prestigious designation by enhancing visitor management and infrastructure.
While not currently considering stripping the title, the foundation seeks to collaborate on a plan to make Machu Picchu a global example of effective heritage site management. This initiative underscores the urgent need for sustainable tourism practices to balance visitor access with the critical preservation of this invaluable historical and cultural landmark.
